What Makes Our Alcoholism Treatment Program Effective
According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), no single approach works for everyone. The most effective alcoholism treatment programs bring together FDA-approved medications, behavioral therapies, and ongoing support tailored to the individual. That’s exactly the philosophy at Lighthouse.
The NIAAA identifies behavioral therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and motivational approaches as among the most effective tools for helping people change their relationship with alcohol and build lasting coping skills. At Lighthouse, our programs reflect this evidence through individualized and group counseling, trauma-informed care, and Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) with naltrexone to ease cravings and support lasting recovery from alcohol use disorder. None of these pieces work in isolation; they come together in a personalized treatment plan built around the whole person.
The Stages of Alcohol Addiction Treatment at Lighthouse
Recovery from alcoholism isn’t a single moment; it’s a series of connected steps, each one preparing you for the next. Here’s what that looks like here at Lighthouse.
Stage 1: Assessment & Intake
Every journey begins with a conversation. When you connect with Lighthouse, our clinical team conducts a thorough assessment covering your substance use history, physical health, and mental health needs. This shapes a personalized treatment plan from day one. Our admissions process is clear, supportive, and judgment-free from the very first call.
Stage 2: Medically Supervised Detox: Residential Withdrawal Management
For many people, detox is the essential first step. Unlike some substances, alcohol withdrawal can be medically serious. In severe cases, symptoms can escalate to seizures or a condition called delirium tremens, which is why professional medical supervision matters so much. Lighthouse’s Residential Withdrawal Management program provides 24/7 nursing care, continuous monitoring, medications to keep you safe and as comfortable as possible, mental health evaluation, and MAT when appropriate. You won’t go through it alone.
Stage 3: PHP (Partial Hospitalization Program)
Once you’ve stabilized, many clients move into our PHP, a structured day-treatment program requiring 20+ hours of weekly group counseling, plus individual therapy, psychiatric care, MAT, nursing services, case management, and peer support. It’s designed for people in the early stages of recovery who need intensive support and are able to return to a safe home or recovery residence each evening.
Stage 4: Outpatient Rehab
As you build strength and stability, Outpatient Rehab grows with you. Our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) starts at 5 days per week, with 9 to 19 hours of programming weekly, and steps down to 4, then 3 days as your independence increases. Individual and group counseling, specialized groups covering trauma, mental health, and life skills, case management, and MAT continue throughout. When you complete IOP, our Outpatient Program (OP) is there to keep the support going as you step fully into everyday life.
Stage 5: Continuing Care & Peer Support
Recovery doesn’t end when formal programming does, and at Lighthouse, neither does our support. Our certified peer support specialists have walked their own recovery journey and bring that lived experience to every interaction, offering encouragement and accountability that go beyond clinical care. Recovery housing is also available for clients who benefit from a sober, structured living environment as they build long-term stability.

Frequently Asked Questions About Alcohol Addiction Treatment
Can I attend alcohol rehab while still working or caring for my family?
This is one of the most common concerns we hear, and for many people, the answer is yes. Lighthouse’s Outpatient Rehab, including IOP, is built around the reality that life doesn’t stop during recovery. The program’s flexible scheduling is designed so clients can continue meeting work, school, and family responsibilities while still receiving the clinical support they need. Our admissions team will help find the level of care that fits both where you are clinically and where you are in life.
How long are alcohol rehab programs?
There’s no single answer, and that’s actually a good thing. Program length at Lighthouse is shaped by your progress, not a fixed calendar. Generally speaking, detox lasts several days to a week or more, depending on the severity of dependence. PHP typically runs 14 to 21 days. IOP spans several weeks through the step-down from 5 to 4 to 3 days per week, and clients who continue into OP may remain in programming for several months. A full continuum from detox through outpatient often spans 60 to 90 days or more. Your clinical team will reassess and adjust throughout to make sure you’re moving at the right pace.
How do the alcoholism treatment stages work?
At Lighthouse, each stage flows directly into the next. It starts with a thorough assessment and intake, moves into medically supervised detox, then into the intensive support of PHP, followed by the step-down structure of Outpatient Rehab, and continues through peer support and ongoing care. The clinical team continuously reassesses your progress at every stage, so when one phase ends, your next step is already in place, and you’re never left without a plan.
Does insurance cover alcohol rehab?
For most people, yes, insurance covers a meaningful portion of treatment. Lighthouse accepts Medicaid, Medicare, and a wide range of commercial health insurance plans. Our admissions team will verify your benefits at no cost to you before you begin. If you’re unsure what your plan covers or what you’ll pay out of pocket, just call us at (614) 334-6903. We’ll walk you through it clearly and without pressure.
