It’s the most wonderful time of the year. The snow is falling, children are on break from school, and everyone is excited to be home with their families and friends. Except sometimes when you’re sober, family & friends can become overwhelming. Here are 5 tips to help you enjoy the holidays while staying sober:
- If it isn’t good for you, you don’t have to go. Just because they are family does not mean you have to put yourself into toxic and uncomfortable situations. Your sobriety must always come first.
- Have a strategy. If you do decide to go to a holiday event with family or friends, always have a strategy for if it becomes too overwhelming. Take a friend or drive yourself so you aren’t stuck if you want to leave early.
- Create new traditions. This is a great opportunity to start a new tradition for the holidays that fits with your new lifestyle. Invite friends and family to join too.
- Be of service. Help the person that is cooking dinner or volunteer at a soup kitchen for the holidays. Helping others is a great way to be accountable and keep busy.
- Be kind to yourself. The holidays can be tough regardless of if you have 5 days sober or 5 years. Take care of yourself.
